Athenry senior team unlucky to lose 4-2 to Westport on penalties in the Connacht cup final. Athenry A team play East United in the Michael O' Byrne cup final on Saturday the 19th May at 6pm in Deacy (Terryland) Park, Galway. All support is welcome. Well done to Cillian Lawless who scored for Galway under 12s at the weekend.

News
Athenry senior team were extremley unlucky to lose 4-2 on penalties to Westport United in the Connacht cup final in their quest for 3 in a row. They would have been the first team to ever achieve this. The game was played in terrible windy conditions with few chances in normal and extra time with a final score of 0-0. Athenry came closest through Conor Cannon and Gary Forde. Athenry defended very well against the wind in the second half with keeper John Grealish making some good saves and Ronan Kinneen and his back four in excellent form. John Grealish saved the first penalty for Athenry with Ray Moran and Stephen Rabbitte scoring 2 excellent penalties. The Westport keeper won the day with 2 great saves. Athenry can look forward to coming back in the O' Byrne cup final against East United in Terryland. Athenry B had an excellent 3-1 win in their last game against Claregalway to stay up in division 3. Seventeen year old Robert Carr scored with an excellent chip from 35 yards in to the top corner to open the scoring. Emmett Byrne added a second with a diving header from a Colm kilkelly corner and David Ward and Mark Lawless combined with Conor O' Grady to set up a tap in for Stephen Kelly for the third to give Athenry a 3-1 half time lead. Athenry defended well till the end with keeper Thomas Dolan making some excellent saves and some good defending from Aidan Fahy, Sean Flaherty and David Glynn. Athenry did well to come from 9 points behind with an unbeaten run of 6 games.

Our under 15A team had an excellent away win to Barna united to stay up in the premier league. Athenry were 2-1 down with 10 minutes to go but rallied excellently to win 3-2 with Eoin Lally scoring twice and Cillian McDaid scoring the other. A very good season for Athenry back in the premier league. The under 13A team had a great 6-4 win against Mervue United A in Division one. Aaron Leggett scored an excellent hat trick with Daniel Grealish scoring twice and Odhran Monaghan also scoring. They lost to both Salthill Devon B and Corrib Celtic in the last 2 games with Aaron Leggett scoring in both matches. The under 13B lost to Salthill Devon B in their last match in the league cup quarter final and also lost to Foundation in their last game in Division 3 with Darren Jennings, Shane Kelly and Adam Kellegher scoring for Athenry. At under 12 level AFC Athenry beat Corofin 4-0 with Cillian Lawless, Morgan Leggett, Cyprien Drozdal, Liam Eganall scoring. The Real Athenry team beat Craughwell 4-1 with Adam Pomphrett (2) and Adam Kellegher (2) scoring. Inter Athenry were unlucky to lose 3-2 to Colga with Elliot Langan and Daniel Kineen scoring. Athenry under 11B team had an excellent 6-1 win against Tuam Celtic in the under 11 league. The b team beat Corrib Celtic 2-0. The c team lost to Oranmore. The under 15B team had a good 2-2 draw away to Barna with Cian Burke scoring twice. They also had an excellent 3-2 win against leaders Corofin in Division 3. Darragh Bergin, Liam O' Grady and Daniel The under 14Bs lost 1-0 to Kilshanvey A in their last game. They were unlucky not to win with Chris Allen, Dali Mbonga, Aaron Leggett and Odhran Monaghan all going close. Athenry under 14B lost 3-2 to Mervue in division 4. In an exiting game Athenry came from 3-0 down at half time. Chris Allen and Dali Mbonga scored two excellent goals with Dali and Aaron Leggett coming very close to an equaliser. They also came from 2 down to beat Kilshanvey 3-2 in Division 4. Louis Gray, Christopher Allen and Daniel Grealish all scored for Athenry after excellent crosses from Dali Mbonga. They lost their last game to Kilshanvey 1-0.

Oranmore Tournament
Athenry fielded 6 teams in the above tournament with 2 teams at under 8, 9 and 10 levels the under 10s won the fair play award. See photos below.

Community Games
Athenry fielded 2 under 12 and one under 13 teams in the community games 5 a side in Lettermullin. Athenry lost all 3 games with the under 13s losing in the last second. They also featured on TG4 news on Saturday the 24th March. We also entered u15 & U13 girls teams this year. I am delighted to report that we brought home silver in both ages. The U15's automatically got into the final as there is no major competition but the u13 had to work very hard to get out of prelims and win to reach the final.
